The Battle of Chiari 1 September 1701 a battle between Imperial and French troops during the War of Spanish Succession.

Prehistory

At the beginning of the Spanish War of Succession occupied Spanish- French troops under the command of Marshal Catinat almost all of northern Italy and secured the passes to Austria. However, the Austrian army under the leadership of Eugene of Savoy was victorious in the Battle of Carpi and so got access to the valley of the Mincio, and thus to northern Italy. Since it Catinat in the aftermath failed Eugene of Savoy hold of his march on Milan, the French King Louis XIV had him replaced by Villeroi as commander in chief.

Battle

When Eugene of Savoy heard of the change of command at the French troops, he expected an imminent attack. Therefore, he broke off his advance on Milan and entrenched himself instead in the place Chiari. Villeroi ignored the warnings of his generals regarding the strong Austrian defenses and ordered on September 1, to storm their positions. The attacking French suffered heavy losses by the bombardment of the well- entrenched Austrians and had to abort the attack eventually. At the end of the battle they had suffered a loss of about 3,000 men, while the Austrian troops had only lost about 150 men.

After repulsed attack the French troops moved into a fortified position not far from Chiari. Both armies were then in their camps, without the risk of another attack. Finally, the supply situation was very bad in both camps. In mid-November, therefore, gave the French on their position and retreated to a winter camp in the duchy of Milan.
