In the Battle of Friedland ( Friedland in East Prussia ) is a 80,000 -strong French army under Napoleon Bonaparte proposed a 60,000 -strong Russian- Prussian army under General Levin August von Bennigsen. It was the last battle in the 4th Coalition War

Prehistory

On 7 and 8 February 1807 took place near the Battle of Eylau Prussian ( Bagrationowsk ) between French forces under Napoleon Bonaparte and the Russo- Prussian forces under General Count Levin August von Bennigsen rather. By this battle the combined Russo- Prussian troops were the first to offer Napoleon Paroli. But without further exploit this partial success, the Russian troops entrenched at salvation mountain. So Napoleon managed to capture the city of Danzig and to unite his troops. Only then General Bennigsen was active, but Napoleon could not force them to battle and retreated again after Heilenberg back, then surprisingly attack without waiting for reinforcements.

Battle Record

Bennigsen -studded evening of June 13, Friedland, and then a beachhead on the all: to form and fill the forest with Sortlack (Russian Lawa ). Here he met the French troops stationed there under Lannes and Mortier. This succeeded with great difficulty, Bennigsen stop until the main French forces could intervene, 17 against clock in the battle. So Marshal Ney began to attack the corps of Prince Bagration in the forest of Sortlack and him back. Thus the French could in turn take the offensive. They managed to position the artillery so favorable that those at the river bend Russian troops fell into disarray. This enabled the French to throw back the Russian troops after fierce resistance over the river. Due to the single crossing of the All Disabled, it came to large losses on the Russian side, especially now that the right wing was still on the opposite shore, when the bridge was blown up by their own troops. The Russian army could retreat from East Prussia only under enormous losses ( 20,000 men ). The French troops had to mourn loss of about 8,000 men.

Results

Through this battle Russia and Prussia were forced to sign the Peace of Tilsit. With this defeat and the subsequent peace treaty, Prussia adopted for the time being from the series of major European powers. Napoleon, Russia succeeded, albeit to win only for a short time as an ally. Poland arose in the form of the Duchy of Warsaw as a vassal state of France for a few years back as a state entity.

Others

To commemorate the battle a street in Paris, Avenue de Friedland was named in the 8th arrondissement after the event.
