Battle of Heilsberg

In the battle of salvation mountain ( in East Prussia ) met during the Fourth Coalition war on June 10, 1807 ( four days before the decisive battle of Friedland ), the French and the Russian army together.

Prehistory

The Russian general Bennigsen tried in the summer of 1807 westward push forward, but was soon pushed back by Napoleon and retired to salvation mountain and entrenched himself there.

Battle Record

The French army, under Marshals Murat and Lannes attacked the Russian army under General Bennigsen in Heilenberg to who had holed up with over a hundred guns in the city. The city was fortified and was strategically located on the left bank of all. Bennigsen was able to fend off the attacks of the French troops and hold the position. But he had to withdraw the following day towards Friedland, to avoid circumvention by Napoleon and cutting off the supply routes to the north.

Results

Holding the position could not be used by Bennigsen. The French main army threatened him to get around and he had to retire despite held positions. The goal of the French to distribute Bennigsen out of his positions, failed. This defeat dropped by the following victory at the Battle of Friedland not significant.
