Battle of La Rochelle

In the battle of La Rochelle on 22 and June 23, 1372, the Franco- Castilian fleet defeated the British.

Since 1152 Gascony belonged to the English possession. With the peace of Brétigny of 1360 England was in the Hundred Years War, large areas of south-western France. This was also La Rochelle, on the Gulf of Biscay behind the Ile de Ré and Ile d' Oléron located under English rule.

But already in 1369 began the reconquest of France. La Rochelle, one of the few major port cities, was besieged. The British tried to make troop reinforcements by sea.

It was the English fleet under John Hastings, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, however, intercepted by a Franco- Castilian fleet under Admiral Ambrosio Bocanegra front of the harbor entrance. She brought the English fleet at a heavy defeat. Hastings was taken prisoner.
