Battle of Montecatini

The Battle of Montecatini was held at today Montecatini Terme on August 29, 1315. The opponents were the cities of Pisa under their Ghibelline Mr. Uguccione della Faggiola and Lucca on one side. You faced a coalition of cities of Florence, Siena, Prato, Pistoia, Arezzo, Volterra, San Gimignano and its Neapolitan allies under Philip I of Taranto.

Winner of the debate remained, contrary to all expectations, Pisa and Lucca. The town of Montecatini, which had previously been under Florentine rule two years, was besieged and conquered by the Pisans. Among the participants of the battle was Castruccio Castracane from Lucca to Pisa pages. Among the dead were Philip's eldest son Charles of Taranto ( 19 years old) and his brother Pietro Tempesta (23 years).

The San Giorgio ai Tedeschi church near the cathedral at Pisa was built after 1316. Through it should be reminded of the German soldiers who had fallen in battle.
