Battle of Nam Dong

The Battle of Nam Dong was a nocturnal attack of the National Liberation Front on an American base field of the U.S. Army Special Forces during the Vietnam War in 1964.

The Battle

On the night of July 6, 1964, there was an attack by two battalions of the People's Liberation Army at a camp in the Central Highlands near the village of Nam Dong. In an all-night battle succeeded the defenders consisting of the ODA -726 (Operational Detachment, German train ) to hold, the South Vietnamese armed forces and Australian soldiers under heavy losses the base against the numerically far superior enemy. The commander, Captain Roger HC Donlon was then personally honored by President Lyndon B. Johnson with the first Medal of Honor, which was awarded in this war. The Nam Dong Special Forces Camp was laid by mortar fire and then erupting in fire rubble.
