Battle of Oriskany

Ticonderoga - Hubbardton - Fort Ann - Oriskany - Bennington - Saratoga ( Freeman's Farm - Bemis Heights ) - Fort Clinton and Fort Montgomery

The Battle of Oriskany was an event on August 6, 1777 during the Saratoga campaign of the American Revolutionary War. An American militia unit under General Nicholas Herkimer was lured into an ambush and largely wiped out by pro-British loyalists under Barry St. Leger. On the British side, a large contingent of Indians took part in the attack under Joseph Brant and John Butler.

The Americans wanted their action to relieve the besieged by the British Fort Stanwix, but were repulsed. Herkimer was doing critically wounded, but still organized an orderly retreat. A heavy thunderstorm offered the surviving Americans a chance to escape, but half of the men were dead, wounded or captured.

However, the battle allowed the besieged a failure in which the supplies of the besiegers were largely destroyed and thus contributed to the fact that the British Saratoga campaign failed.
