Battle of Pleasant Hill

The Battle of Pleasant Hill was a battle of the American Civil War. It took place on 9 April 1864.

After the defeat at the Battle of Mansfield on the day before the 13,000 men of the Union troops under Major General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks dodged to a position south of the village of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana. Banks occupied an elevated position with views to the north and awaited the attack of the pursuing 12,500 Confederates under Major General Richard Taylor.

At 16 clock attacked Taylor on the right flank of the Union troops with cavalry, while three infantry divisions attacked the left flank and the center. The attack of the Confederate infantry were driven back to the place. Banks commanded the use of the reserve against the advancing Confederate right wing and pushed them back until night fell.

Despite his victory, Banks dodged to Grand Encore, where was the Union fleet on the Red River. Banks Dodge, having won the battle led to the end of the Red River campaign in the Union.
