Prehistory

Napoleon Bonaparte crossed on June 24, 1812 in Kovno, the Memel and met on 28 June in Vilnius, where he was received by the Lithuanians, with open arms. The Russian army had withdrawn.

While General Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly with 130,000 men covered the route to Saint Petersburg and thereby advancing the Daugava River, the General Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration secured with the 2nd army the way to Moscow, relying on the Dniepr.

Between the two rivers is hilly terrain in which is the watershed between the Baltic and the Black Sea. Here is a 80 km wide corridor between Vitebsk and Smolensk by the Napoleon 's Grande Armée, 640,000 men, 60,000 horses and 1,200 guns thought strongly to lead in the direction of Moscow.

On July 7, General Bagration received in Bobruisk command, with his troops left the Dniepr to set in motion to prevent the French at the transition, or stop them at least before Smolensk until General Barclay de Tolly would arrive with reinforcements.

For the Grande Armée, the only possible transition point was across the river at Mogilev. Général Louis Nicolas Davout was with his troops just 85 kilometers from the city, which we achieved by a forced march first.

The Battle

After Bagration had found that was already Davout in Mogilev, he decided to attack itself. He wanted to try to push back the French across the river, or at least to prevent them from further action, so Barclay de Tolly would in time may appear.

Bagration ordered General Nikolai Nikolaevich Rajewski standing closer to Mogilev, with its 20,000 -strong federation, the French corps of Davout Général unstoppable. This was 28,000 men strong and consisted of the Division Compans, Dessaix the Division and the Division Claparède; and the cavalry of Generals de Bordesoulle and de Thiembronne. Davout had received the order of Napoleon, the enemy not to pursue its own forces not to splinter. General Raïevski fought ten hours at the top of his attackers to back then in good order on the field fortifications of Saltanovka (south of Mogilev ). This commitment has allowed Bagration, his 30,000 -strong unit to the Dnieper on Novy Bykhov (now Novy Bykhaw ) take back (south of Mogilev ).

The Russians had losses 2500-5200 man, the French 1000 men, including 100 men from the 108e Régiment d'Infanterie de ligne as prisoners.
