The Battle of the Arar was a battle between Romans and Helvetern in June 58 BC It ended with a victory Gaius Julius Caesar.

Prehistory

The appointed governor of Gallia Narbonensis Caesar in 58 BC claimed that his province was threatened by the wandering in Gaul Helvetii. Riverside Arar, today Saône, finally met the two armies.

The Battle

The Helvetian warriors put up a fight, while the civilian people of the march wanted to flee across the river. But Caesar was the warriors soon defeat, and capture still a good quarter of the fleeing men and women. The battle ended in victory for the Romans.

The Battle of Arar was the first major battle of the Gallic War. The Helvetians, fought against the Romans still in a later battle, the Battle of Bibracte.
