Battle of the Elleporus

The Battle of the Elleporus took place in 389 BC between Syracuse under the tyrant Dionysius I on one side and the collar of the Italioten on the other side instead.

Dionysius I was keen to gain a hegemonic position in the Magna Graecia, the Greek world of Italy. This was offset against the independence aspirations of the rest of the Greek colonies in southern Italy. The cities of Thurii, Rhegium, Kaulonia, Metapontum, Tarentum and Elea then joined together to Italiote covenant.
