Battle of the Rishki Pass

The Battle of the Rischkipass found 759 between the Bulgarian and the Byzantine Empire instead. The battle ended with the defeat of the Byzantines.

Course

From 755-775 the Byzantine Emperor Constantine V took at least nine attempts to conquer the Bulgarian Empire and integrate the territory again in the Byzantine state. His efforts failed, however, always the opposition of the Bulgarians. 759 among the Bulgarian ruler Khan Winech grabbed Constantine V again. However, the Bulgarians were able to inflict a defeat on Rischkipass the Byzantines. Constantinople fell into an ambush and a large part of his army was destroyed, and he himself escaped with a few followers. The course of the battle describes the historian Theophanes vividly in his World Chronicle.

Winech not used after the defeat of Byzantium, however, its strategic advantage and took on peace negotiations. The Bulgarian prince did not agree with this policy and let the Khan murder 761.
