Batu Tara

Batu Tara during an outbreak in 2009

The 748 m-high stratovolcano Batu Tara is located in Indonesia and is the small island of Pulau Komba. It lies about 60 km off the coast of the larger island of Flores. Komba Iceland is difficult to achieve and is outside established shipping lanes. The coastline of the island is so steep that the landing is virtually impossible. Therefore, the island is also uninhabited.

Batu Tara promotes mainly basaltic lava, which is rather unusual for a subduction zone volcano.

The volcano is permanently active and produced several times a day strombolian eruptions. RedHot spatter are thrown up by explosions several hundred meters. This land partly on the volcano slope and roll into the sea. Ash plumes occasionally reach a height of several kilometers and may pose a hazard to air traffic.
