Bavaria state election, 1998

The elections to the 14th Bavarian Parliament took place on 13 September 1998 the turnout was 69.8 %. Together with the choice of three referendums were held. Two of them came into being by the state legislature ( mandatory referendum ), the third in the wake of the successful referendum " Lean State without Senate " to which the state legislature introduced a custom template for Senate reform to the competition vote due to the change of the Bavarian constitution.

Starting point and result

This was the second choice among the incumbent since 1993, Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber. For the SPD took up also for the second time Renate Schmidt.

The case of Mehmet played a role in the election campaign.

In the state elections in 1974 Alfons Goppel had scored 62.1 % for the CSU. Since this historically best election result, the CSU had always easily lost in the state elections and was finally able to stop at the 1998 state elections this trend. The CSU has maintained its absolute majority and came to 52.91 % ( 0.1 percentage points), but won in two weeks later held parliamentary elections only 47.7 %. This led to the takeover of the party presidency by Edmund Stoiber of Theo Waigel.

The hopes of the SPD on a change of power were not met. Instead, they lost 1.3 percentage points after, when the previous choice still on 30.0 percent of the votes had been able to increase. While the Greens achieved their goal choice and moved the fourth time in the Landtag, but also lost 0.4 percentage points.

Edmund Stoiber was confirmed after this election in his office as Prime Minister and led his third cabinet.

Referenda

Simultaneously to the state election two referendums were held to decided by the parliament amendments to the state constitution in Bavaria. The first template provided for the adjustment referred to in the Constitution fundamental rights and state goals. The second document contained adaptations of articles on Diet and State Government. Furthermore, a referendum on the referendum " referendum " was held Slimmer without Senate ", presented to the state parliament of a Senate reform bill as a competitor template for voting. In the referendum of a majority of voters approved the two amendments to the state constitution. The template Lean State without Senate received was also adopted and sat in the vote against the bill through the Diet.
