Bavarian D VIII

The locomotives of Class D VIII were wet steam locomotives of the Bavarian State Railways.

History

For the distance between Freilassing and Berchtesgaden, the slopes had up to 40 ‰, 1888 new locomotives were needed. Krauss first delivered three machine that received the course numbers 904-906. The powerful boiler required a barrel axis that was arranged according to a proposal by Richard von Helmholtz as a trailing axle in the form of a Krauss- Helmholtz steering rack. Thus equipped, had the locomotives on the faster downhill, which was backwards, good running properties, while for the slower uphill the guide was sufficiently by the first Kuppelradsatz.

1890 were procured (train numbers 946, 947 and 1901 to 1905 ) and another two in 1893 another five locomotives.

1898 four engines were for the Ammersee train again procured, in 1906 received the numbers to 1909, and in 1903 another five. In these nine locomotives of the coal box was behind the cab, so that the distance between the third coupled axle and wheel set to 200 mm and the total length of the locomotives to 500 mm enlarged. In addition, the Riggenbach counter-pressure brake, the first series was omitted. Boiler (except for the arrangement of the steam dome ) and engine and thus the performance remained unchanged.

The Pfalzbahn has with the genus T 4.I obtained similar locomotives, but were slightly smaller and had a smaller traction and impeller diameter.

The German Reichsbahn took over in 1925, nine of the ten locomotives of the first series and all nine of the second series as the class 98.6 with the numbers 98661-669 and 98 671 and 98 679 The first series was retired by 1933, the second to about 1937.

The former D VIII 1909 came after the Second World War to ÖBB and was there until 1958 as ÖBB 891.01 in service.

Augsburger Localbahn

The Augsburg Localbahn (AL) in 1913 bought by Krauss three locomotives, which corresponded to the D VIII of the second series. The locomotives with numbers 1-3 proven to the partly very small radii of Localbahn very good, so that in 1937 - after nearly 40 -year-old drawings - a fourth engine of this type was purchased, this time by Krauss -Maffei. This locomotive was the track number 5

The locomotives Nos. 1 and 3 were scrapped in 1957, the No. 2 and 5 were sold in 1956 to the Südchemie plant in Kelheim.
