Bayamo on the map of Cuba

Bayamo is the capital of the eponymous Municipalities and the Province of Granma in eastern Cuba. It lies at the northern foot of the Sierra Maestra and has 235 107 inhabitants ( 2012). The city is known for its historical and cultural merit as the "cradle of the Cuban nation."

Founded in the place was on November 5, 1513 by Diego Velázquez as Villa de San Salvador. After Baracoa, it is the second oldest settlement founded by the Spanish conquistadors in Cuba. 1868 took place the Battle of Bayamo during the independence struggle. The rebels burned the city down in 1869, so they do not fall into the hands of the enemy. One of the participating rebels, Pedro Figueredo, took the battle as a template for his song La Bayamesa used since 1902 as the Cuban national anthem.
