Bayard is a city in Grant County in the U.S. state of New Mexico in the United States with 2534 inhabitants ( 2000).

Geography

The city is located on U.S. Highway 180 in the middle east of Grant County in southwestern New Mexico, about 40 miles from Arizona in the West is removed and has a total area of 2.3 km ² without significant water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,534 people in 970 households and 719 families. The population density was 1126 people per km ². The racial the population was composed of 65.67 % White, 0.32 % African American, 1.66 % Native American, 0.04 % Asian, and other groups.

Of the 970 households out of which 34.30 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.10 % were married couples living together, 18.50% had a female householder with no husband, and 25.80% were non-families, 23.60 % of all households are made and 13.40% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.07.

In relation to the entire town the population was spread out with 29.20 % under the age of 18, 8.50 % from 18 to 24, 22.10% from 25 to 44 years, 23.30 % between 45 and 64 years and 16.90 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 83 men.

The median income for a household was $ 21,957, and the median income for a family was $ 27,632. Males have a median income of $ 30,200, women $ 17,132. The per capita income was $ 11,066. 19.70% of families and 24.10 % of the population were below the poverty line.
