Bayer Code

The EPPO Code, formerly known as Bayer code is a system for rapid identification of harmful organisms in agricultural crops and has prevailed particularly in weed research. The EPPO Code is the responsibility of European and Mediterraneaen Plant Protection Organization ( EPPO).

The harmful organisms of plants, animals and diseases are named with a unique code. The plants are characterized by a 5-digit letter code. In other organisms there are 6 letters. Most abbreviations are derived from the scientific name. For example, the EPPO Code for maize ( Zea mays) ZEAMA, or for late blight (Phytophthora infestans ) of potato and tomato phytin. The advantage of these codes is that it when it is created, is always the same. So he is not subject to ongoing changes and revisions as they are commonly used for scientific names and eventually led to a number of synonyms, and lead.

Originally, the code came from pesticide manufacturers Bayer CropScience, but is now run by EPPO and therefore also EPPO code.
