The Klinikum Bayreuth GmbH was founded on 18 December 2003 and emerged from the Municipal Hospitals Bayreuth. Its sole shareholder is the Krankenhauszweckverband Bayreuth, whose members in turn are the city of Bayreuth and the district of Bayreuth. The Company is since 2004 sponsor of the two hospitals Hospital Bayreuth ( Preuschwitzer road 101) and the clinic Hohewarte ( Hohewarte 8). Both together form the only hospital with maximum care in Upper Franconia since January 2010.

The hospital is since 1984 an academic teaching hospital of the University of Erlangen -Nuremberg and meets on local priority tasks in diagnosis and therapy and stops in front of a highly differentiated range of services and medical- technical equipment. With about 2300 employees and 294 training places Klinikum Bayreuth GmbH is one of the largest employers and training organizations in the region.

Since 2005, with the clinic Fichtelgebirge gGmbH a cooperation agreement. The Klinikum Bayreuth is responsible for the operation of a cardiac catheter measuring unit in Hospital Marktredwitz.

In the Klinikum Kulmbach, a cooperation agreement in the field of radiotherapy was decided. The subsidiary MedZentrum Klinikum Bayreuth GmbH also operates a linear accelerator for inpatient and outpatient care to patients in the hospital Kulmbach.
