BBCH-scale

The BBCH code gives information about the morphological stage of development of a plant. The acronym officially stands for the Federal Biological Research Centre, Federal Office of Plant Varieties and CHemical industry. The BBCH-scale is used in scientific communication on questions of plant development and the optimal or recommended time of use of fertilizers and plant protection measures in crop cultivation.

BBCH - code stages:

  • 00-09: germination
  • 10-19: Leaf development
  • 20-29: tillering
  • 30-39: Bolting
  • 40-49: Spiked thresholds
  • 50-59: ear emergence
  • 60-69: Flower
  • 70-79: Development of fruit
  • 80-89: seed maturity
  • 90-99: Senescence (with annual plants ) or entering the dormancy ( in perennial plants)
