Bcl-2-associated X protein

Bax, a protein in vertebrates, which acts as co- factor of the tumor suppressor protein p53. Bax gene belongs to the Bcl-2 gene family. Bax is induced by p53 and accelerates the induction of apoptosis. Low Bax distribution correlates with poor prognosis in oral cavity carcinomas.
