Beadle County, South Dakota

Geography

The County is located in east-central South Dakota, is in the north about 130 km from North Dakota, approximately 110 km to the east of Minnesota and south about 100 km away from Nebraska. History

Beadle County was formed in 1879 as Originalcounty of the Dakota Territory and is since 1880 under self-government. It was named after William Henry Harrison Beadle, a Brigadier General during the Civil War. In 1869 he was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant as General of the Dakota Territory.

According to tradition, was the first permanent settlers in the County Charles Miner, who staked his claim on the James River in the summer of 1879. In the spring and summer of 1880 a railway line laid their tracks by the County and new settlers came to the area. Three years later, most to the available land was farmed.
