Beat is the ninth studio album by King Crimson and the second after the reunion of the band in 1981. Was published in 1982. The song Heartbeat was released as a single and reached number 57 in the U.S. charts. The album came in at number 52, it was the first time in the band's history that no personnel reshuffle was effected between two studio albums.

Style and reception

Musically, the band moved to the New Wave style, which she has introduced Discipline. Fripp and Belews different guitar textures, Levin's bass explorations and the unusual drum rhythms make this album especially interesting for musicians. Also on this album Tony Levin used again the Chapman Stick. Greg Pato of Allmusic gave the album 4 1/2 stars out of 5, considers that it was not as good as the previous album Discipline.

With the title and in individual pieces, the band refers to the Beat poets, and in particular the novel On the Road by Jack Kerouac, who was 25 years previously appeared.

  • Neal and Jack and Me refers to novel On the Road and the protagonists Neal Cassady ( Dean Moriarty in the book ) and Jack Kerouac from the perspective of her car, a 1952 Studebaker.
  • Heartbeat is the title of an autobiographical novel by Carolyn Cassady, wife of Neal Cassadys.
  • Sartori in Tangier is the modification of the title of a further book by Jack Kerouac, Satori in Paris. Tangier was in the 1950s, a popular tourist destination and residence of some beatniks, such as William S. Burroughs, and Paul Bowles
  • Neurotica was the title of a small magazine in which Allen Ginsberg published his poems.
  • The Howler refers to the poet Allen Ginsberg and his poem Howl.
