Beatrice I, Countess of Burgundy

Beatrix of Burgundy ( * around 1140 or shortly thereafter, † November 15, 1184 in Jouhe at Dole ) was a Roman - German queen (since 1156 ) and Empress (since 1167 ) of the Holy Roman Empire.

Life

Beatrix was the only daughter of Count Renaud III. of Burgundy (c. 1093, † 1148 ) and Agatha of Lorraine (* 1115, † 1147 ), daughter of the Duke of Lorraine Simon I. (c. 1076, † 1138/1141 ).

On June 17, 1156 she married very young in Würzburg Emperor Frederick I ( Barbarossa ), after it had been three years earlier separated from Adela of Vohburg. On 9 October the same year she was crowned Hillin case of mania, the Archbishop of Trier, to the queen. The Beatrix in marriage to introduced Franche-Comté strengthened the power of Barbarossa in the Kingdom of Burgundy, where the influence of the Holy Roman kings was traditionally weak. On one hand, Barbarossa was thus an important access to Italy, which was under his military control, on the other hand, the revenue of this kingdom part Barbarossa increased opportunities to recruit mercenaries for its military operations.

On August 1, 1167 Beatrix was by Pope Paschal III. crowned at Rome to the Empress, in August 1178 in Vienne Queen of Burgundy. The educated and intelligent Beatrix is described in contemporary sources as real beauty. The last years of her life spent Beatrix almost exclusively in their Burgundian homeland. She reigned there completely independently, maintained a private courtyard with a private firm and was keen to secure the rights of a future Count of Burgundy.

After her death in 1184, she was transferred to Speyer and probably the end of November 1184 buried in the King's Choir of Aachen Cathedral. After reburial early 20th century, it now rests in a grave Put together with their deceased daughter Agnes in the same year, in the then newly created crypt of the cathedral.
