Beatrice is a city and the county seat of Gage County in the U.S. state of Nebraska.

According to the U.S. Census 2000 Beatrice has 12,496 inhabitants.

Location

Beatrice is located in Gage County Nebraska in the south at the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and U.S. Highway 136, it is approximately 65 miles from Lincoln, capital of Nebraska, removed.

History

Beatrice was founded on July 4, 1857 by pioneers who traveled the Missouri River on a steamboat up to open up new land in Nebraska. Was named after Julia Beatrice Kinney, the eldest daughter of the first president of the Nebraska Association, Judge John Fitch Kinney. The Burlington and Missouri River Railroad reached the town in 1871. During the years 1874-1876 was Beatrice victims of a plague of locusts. The growth of the town slowed namely in something, but in the 1880s, Beatrice was so well developed that trains were running in all directions. In the years 1870 to 1890 the Germans were the largest immigrant group. Founded in 1894 George Everett Haskell and William W. Bosworth the company Beatrice Creamery Company. Senator Algernon Sidney Paddock 1888 was a hotel and build an opera house, but they were destroyed in a fire in 1919. The hotel was newly built in 1924 reopened and is listed .. The first library, the Carnegie Library now in the National Register of Historic Places, it was in Beatrice in 1904. The building is no longer used as a library since 1991. The Beatrice High School in 1929, had a later famous alumni: the actor Robert Taylor (then known as Spangler Arlington Brugh ).
