Béatrice of Vermandois

Beatrix ( † probably before 907) was a wife of the mighty West Frankish comes and marchio Robert ( † 923 ) from the family of Robertiner, which was raised to 922 West Frankish king.

From a deed of the son of Beatrix, the West Frankish dux Francorum Hugo Magnus, issued on March 26, 931, it is clear Beatrix's name. The mother of the dux is called here as domnæ Beatricis, at the same time, this represents their only contemporary mention

Origin

The family background of Beatrix, one of the matriarchs of the Kapetingerdynastie is controversial. Generally it is known in the literature as the daughter of the Count of Vermandois Heribert I., which they would also be of the Frankish Carolingian dynasty rulers belonging. However, this assumption is based on an entry in the resulting in the 11th century Historia Francorum senonensis in which the wife of King Robert I. and mother of Hugo Magnus is named as sister Heribert II. Several subsequent chroniclers, such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni have their information on the genealogical relationships of the early Capetians apparently being drawn from this chronicle of Sens, bringing the membership of Beatrix strengthened the Count House of Vermandois in the general historical canon.

However, it should be borne in mind that the reliability of the Historia Francorum senonensis has been disproved several times in terms of genealogical information. Also, more timely authors, led by Flodoard of Reims, with respect to the family background of the mother of the dux Hugo Magnus silent out. As the only relevant published kinship connection of the dux to Count Heribert II of Vermandois marriage of Count dux is highlighted with an unidentified sister.

When the Capetian dynasty began in the 13th century, their dynastic descent to propagate from the Carolingians, it relied attention to the wife of King Philip II Augustus, Isabella of Hainault († 1190 ), as a link. Beatrix as alleged and closer in time standing descendant of Charlemagne did not play any role.

Death

The year of death of Beatrix is also not precisely determined. The document from the year 931 suggests that she was still alive at the time of issue, but it is here mentioned without any royal titulary, although her husband had been raised to 922 West Frankish king. The Coronation of Emma, a daughter of King Robert I. and wife of King Rudolf, in the year 923 found, however, the timely chroniclers mention.

Probably Beatrix had died before the enthronement of Robert I in the year 922, perhaps before the year 907 in a document of King Charles III. of the Simple 21 May 907 is in fact called the venerandi comitis Rotberti ( later King Robert I ) comitissæ with a Adelæ. Since the dux Hugo Magnus was standing by his father's death 923 already in mature age, it can be assumed that the said Adela was the second wife of his father and mother of his daughters. His own mother, Beatrix, so probably died before 907, and thus never come to royal honors.
