Beatriz Milhazes

Beatriz Milhazes ( b. 1960 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian artist. Milhazes is known for her colorful works, in which she faces folkloric elements of Brazilian culture European works of modernism. Her work is influenced by the writer Oswald de Andrade, a representative of the modernist - flow.

Life and work

As the daughter of a lawyer and an art historian, Milhazes grew up in Rio de Janeiro. She studied Social Communication at the private Faculdades Integradas Hélio Alonso and then moved to the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage.

International breakthrough they achieved with their work at the Carnegie International 1995. 2003 Milhazes represented Brazil at the Venice Biennale.

Milhazes has to date their work in a number of renowned museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo) Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and the Musée d' Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Milhazes works are also part of the permanent collections, inter alia, of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museu de Arte Moderna, São Paulo.
