Beatus of Liébana

Beatus of Liébana (* unknown; † after 798 ) was a Spanish monk and theologian.

Life and work

Beatus was a member of the monastery of San Martin de Turieno in the valley of Liébana in the Kingdom of Asturias. The monastery is now called Santo Toribio de Liébana and is located in the autonomous community of Cantabria in the Picos de Europa in northern Spain.

Beatus was the spokesman of the opponents of the Adoptionism Elipandus of Toledo and corresponded with Alcuin. He is known primarily for his major work, a commentary on the biblical apocalypse in twelve books ( in 776 ) in which there is a Katene. The text is preserved in 34 manuscripts and fragments of the 9th to 16th century. The illustrated manuscripts are each also called Beatus. Beatus ' motivation for the Apocalypse commentary was expected with the year 800 end of the world.
