Beatus Rhenanus

Rhenanus, actually beat image (* August 22 1485 in Schlettstadt; † July 20, 1547 in Strasbourg ) was a German humanist and philologist who emerged from the Schlettstädter school. His name selected in the late 19th century, the German philologist Theodor Birt as a pseudonym.

Life

The family of Rhenanus (hence his style according to humanists Latinized name ) came from Rheinau in Northern Alsace. After the visit of the then famous Latin school in Schlettstadt he studied from 1503 to 1507 in Paris and then began a teaching book printer. From 1511 on, he kept in close contact with the great humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam. As a philologist edited Rhenanus works of the Latin Fathers and classic antiquity. As a historian, he dealt with the prehistory and early history of Germany ( major work Rerum Germanicarum libri tres, 1531). He also worked as a printer and editor.

His extensive library he bequeathed to the Latin school of his native city ( Humanist Library in Schlettstadt ). The library of the Rhenanus was included in the list of world cultural heritage list by UNESCO in 2011.

History of Research

The most significant Beatus Rhenanus researcher of the 19th century was the Austrian Adalbert Horawitz ( 1840-1888 ). As part of a PhD in Latin Studies at Widu -Wolfgang Ehlers the work Rerum Germanicarum libri tres was translated into German.
