Beaufort-en-Vallée

Beaufort -en- Vallée is a French municipality with 6409 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Maine -et -Loire in the Pays de la Loire.

Geography

Beaufort -en- Vallée is a canton capital in the northeast of the department of Maine -et -Loire. It lies in the valley of the Authion, which flows a few kilometers to the southwest. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park Loire -Anjou- Touraine.

History

Beaufort, known since Roman times as Bellum Forte, in the Middle Ages was a county in the duchy of Anjou. Jeanne de Laval, who was married to King René I, retained after his death in 1480 the rights to the County of Beaufort and took there one of its two residences (the other was in Saumur ). They fought for the right to peace, including by previously regulated disputed grazing rights. Because of their generous and kind according to tradition, nature, she is still worshiped in the area.
