Beaufort ( boʊfɚt ) is a small city in and also the administrative seat of Carteret County in the state of North Carolina .. The place was in the United States of America with 3771 inhabitants in 2000, after Henry Somerset, the Duke of Beaufort named and occasionally with the in South Carolina located eponymous town confused, but differ in pronunciation. Beaufort is in New Bern and Bath is the third oldest town in North Carolina and is located in the region of Central Banks in the Atlantic coastal plain in the east of the state. Locally, the North Carolina Maritime Museum and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Duke University, Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences is located.

The town covers an area of 9.2 square kilometers, of which 2.1 square kilometers, ie 22.8 %, water surfaces.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 3,771 people in 1,780 households and 1,048 families. The population density is 531 inhabitants per km ². Racial, the population is composed of 75.9 % White, 20.0 % African American, 0.1 % Native American, 0.4 % Asian and 2.4 % from other ethnic groups; about 1.2 % said the descent from two or more races. 3.8% of the population are Hispanic or Latino.

Of the 1,780 households out of which 21.9 % have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3 % were married couples living together, 15.3 % had a female householder with no husband, and 41.1% were non-families. 35.5 % of all households are made up and in 15.6 % have someone living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.07 and the average family size was 2.65 persons.

18.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.3 % from 18 to 24 years, 27.9% between 25 and 44 years 26.7 % between 45 and 64, and 19.8 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 28,763, and the median income for a family was $ 39,429. Males had a median income of $ 30,859 versus $ 22,955 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,356. 16.6 % of the population and 13.3 % of families are below the poverty line. 35.0 % of them are children and adolescents under age 18 and 10.4% are 65 years or older.
