The monastery of Beaulieu -en- Rouergue ( Bellus Locus; Belloc ) is a former Cistercian abbey in the town of Ginalstal in Tarn- et- Garonne, Midi-Pyrénées region, about 10 km south-east of Caylus in France, in the valley of Seye.

History

The monastery was founded in 1144 by a foundation of Bishop Adhemar III. Founded in Rodez, the daughter monastery of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. It is believed that the first church was destroyed during the Albigensian Crusade. Only after land grants of the Bishop of Rodez Vivian flourished on the monastery. It had the Gran Gien Saint- Journet and Bosc- Gayral, several mills and dairies. Even in the religious wars became the monastery between the fronts of the Protestant Saint -Antonin -Noble- Val and Caylus Catholic and suffered looting and destruction. In the 16th century it fell into coming. 1768 were three monks in the monastery. During the French Revolution the monastery was dissolved in 1791 and sold as national property. After plans to move the church, had not been carried out, the plant in 1875 was declared a monument historique. After a long agricultural use, the monastery came in 1960 to the couple fallow and in 1973 at the Caisse nationale des monuments historiques et des sites, the goal for it to be a center for contemporary art.

Buildings and plant

The system follows the usual Cistercian monasteries scheme. Built from 1275 cruciform church ( 1) with a Tromp dome above the crossing is located in the north of the cloister. The polygonal closed choir has seven lancet windows. In the south transept are the remains of Dormitoriumstreppe to see. The groined vault chapter house (2) with rectangular fin has two cylindrical columns in the shaft. The medieval dormitory is not obtained. The south wing with the refectory was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries to a abbot's house. From Konversenbau in the West ( 4-6 ) of the medieval cellar and the Laiendormitorium 1967 restored as an exhibition space are obtained.
