Beaumont-sur-Oise

Beaumont- sur -Oise is a commune with 9228 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Val- d'Oise in the Île- de -France region; it belongs to Arrondissement Pontoise and the canton of Beaumont- sur- Oise. The city is located 30 kilometers north of Paris, between the valley of the Oise and the forest of Carnelle.

Neighboring municipalities are: Persan, Bruyeres -sur- Oise, Noisy- sur- Oise, Presles, Nointel and Mours.

History

The name comes from the Latin bellus, beautiful, and mons, a mountain, and the river on which the town is located. Beaumont since the 1st century AD, an urban center at a road junction. In the Middle Ages, the place became a Carolingian church, which was built on a site where the previously was a Roman fort. It was the center of the county of Beaumont- sur- Oise.

Prior to the French Revolution was the grain market of Beaumont on 27 April 1775, the starting point of the so-called " flour war " when a crowd is outraged over the high grain, flour and bread prices and finally sacked the market. The unrest intervened quickly around and reached the suburbs of Paris.
