Beaver Island, Falkland Islands

Beaver Iceland ( English for Beaver Island, Spanish: Isla San Rafael ) is one of the Falkland Islands, lying west of the Weddell Iceland and south of New Iceland.

History and population

On the island is Beaver Settlement, which has a private airstrip. Beaver Iceland was named after the whaling ship " Beaver ", which supposedly was the first to sail around Cape Horn whalers. In October 2006, the wreckage of a missing French yacht was discovered near the island.

Fauna

On the island live gentoo penguins, Argentine Kamp foxes (introduced, not to be confused with the Falkland fox ), peregrine falcon, crested caracara, Striated Caracara, guanacos, sea-lions and sea birds. Off the coast there are Tangwälder.
