The Beaver Stadium is an American football stadium on the campus of Pennsylvania State University in State College in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It serves as the home venue of the college football teams Nittany Lions, which is organized in the NCAA. Was named the stadium after James A. Beaver, a former governor of Pennsylvania ( 1887-91 ) and President of the Supervisory Committee of the University.

With a capacity of 107 282 spectators officially it is according to the Michigan Stadium is the second largest stadium in the United States. It ranks as the world's largest sports stadiums. The previous attendance record was achieved on 14 September 2002 with 110 753 spectators during the 40-7 win against Nebraska.

History

Predecessor

Until 1893, the team of Penn State playing on the lawn in front of Old Main, the main lecture building at that time. Beaver Field, a 500 -seat facility, was the first stable home of football teams. 1909 New Beaver Field opened in the northeast of the Recreational Hall. It served as Penn State Stadium until 1960, when the entire 30,000 -seat stadium was dismantled and rebuilt at the east end of the campus, expanded to 46 284 places and new as Beaver Stadium was called.

Extensions

Extensions in the years 1969, 1974 and 1976 increased the seating capacity to 60,203. 1978 have been added, when the stadium was divided into sections and was raised with hydraulic lifts, so you could add more seating along the inner ring of the stadium, where previously was the athletics track further 16,000 seats. 1980 the maximum capacity increased to 83 770. For the 1991 football season, an upper deck was additionally built behind the north end zone to increase the capacity to 90,000.

With the latest enlargement in 2001, the stadium capacity was increased to a total of 107 282. An upper deck was also added at the south end of the stadium, and now blocked the view of the neighboring Mount Nittany (what some fans had sentimental value ).
