Bechet

Bechet is a small town in Dolj county in Lesser Wallachia in Romania.

Location

Bechet is located in the west of the Wallachian Plain, about 4 km north of the Danube - opposite the Bulgarian city of Oryahovo - and 11 km east of the mouth of the Jiu ( Shield ) into the Danube. The county town of Craiova is located about 60 km north.

History

The long Farming place was suitable as a starting point for crossing the Danube with boats and ferries and therefore had economic and military strategic importance. 1877 Bechet was the scene of fighting between Romanian and Russian troops and a Turkish associations other hand, during the Romanian War of Independence.

2004 Bechet was declared a city. The most important employment opportunities for residents are the Danube port, trading in cross-border traffic with Bulgaria, agriculture and fisheries.

Population

1930 lived in Bechet about 2,350 inhabitants. As of the 2002 census, 3,864 inhabitants were registered in the city, including 3,675 Romanians and 187 Roma.

Traffic

Bechet has no rail connection. At the level of the city is a port on the Danube, which is particularly suitable for ferry departures to Bulgaria of importance. There is a regular bus service to Corabia. The town is the starting point for national roads (drum National) DN 54A Corabia, DN 55 and DN 55A to Craiova to Calafat.
