Bedford Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,375 inhabitants at the 2000 census. The city is located in the vicinity of the town of Bedford.

History

Until the 50s of the 20th century Bedford Heights told the story of Bedford Township. Bedford Township was 1797 Western Reserve of Connecticut Land Company surveyed and on April 7, 1823 formally established as part of Connecticut. 1830, the boundaries and the interior of the township of Hezekiah Dunham were measured again exactly. The house, which he built at that time, can still be seen today. On March 15, 1837 Bedford became an independent municipality in 1915 was followed by Maple Heights. Bedford Heights remained still in the township.

It was only in September 1950, signed 91 citizens a petition that would allow the establishment of Bedford Heights as a separate community. This application was just rejected by the Bedford Township Civic League with 239 to 231 votes. On February 20, 1951 ballot was held recently, which eventually supported the creation of the municipality of Bedford Heights with 244 to 220 votes. Robert Williford became the first mayor. Although it came later on a request to merge the community Bedford Heights with the town of Bedford, but this proposal was rejected by a large majority. After even Oakwood and Walton Hills had become independent, the township government was dissolved.

In 1952, the " Bedford Heights Informer " the first local newspaper of the municipality. In 1960, a new statute for the church in force, in order to prepare the city survey. On January 4, 1961 Bedford Heights got the status of a City.

Education

Bedford Heights, together with Bedford, Oakwood and Walton Hills Bedford School District. These include the Bedford High, the Central Primary School, the Glendale Primary School, Columbus Intermediate School, the Carylwood Intermediate School, the Heskett Middle School and Bedford High. Only the Columbus Intermediate School and Heskett Middle School located in Bedford Heights, all other schools are located right on the city of Bedford.
