Bedford OB

The Bedford OB was a bus or coach model, the Bedford brought out in 1939. It replaced the Bedford WTB.

As the WTB, the OB was powered by a six-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 3,519 l. The engine was also known as the 28 hp engine, as it was classified with 28 taxable horsepower. The new type differed from its predecessor mainly by the construction of the chassis. For the first time in Bedford OB constructed a stand-alone frame, while in the previous generation, slightly modified truck chassis were used. The chassis had a wheelbase of 4,420 mm and is as short Schnauzer ( has a short bonnet, under which is the front part of the engine, the rear part protrudes into the passenger compartment and has its own cover ) to consider. The OB had a manual four- speed transmission and a floating rear axle. The hydraulic brakes are vakuumunterstützt.Getriebe, propeller shaft and differential gears were arranged so that the bus had a lowered center aisle. The structures were mostly made of Duple, but still made 46 other body corporate, including Plaxton, Mulliner, SMT and Thurgood, superstructures for the OB. The structures were designed for 26 to 29 passengers.

Before the Second World War only 73 units were built. In 1942 began the production of a simplified version of OWB, according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Supply. The structures with 29 to 32 seats, which are now largely consisted of wood, came from duple and Roe. The bus had among other things, wooden seats. After about 3300 buses produced the production of the OWB was completed in 1945 and re- launched the new OB and manufactured until 1951. A total of 16,164 chassis, of which 12,766 OB, a number that makes this type one of the world's most successful in this order originated. Many OWB were rebuilt after the Second World War on the standard of the OB. Was replaced the bus by the Bedford SB, which however was too big with 33 seats for many operators. Only in 1961 presented to the Bedford Bedford VAS a successor in the order of the OB before.
