Beeckerwerth

Beeckerwerth is a district of Duisburg in the district Meiderich / Beeck. The district has 3,592 inhabitants (December 31, 2013) and an area of 7.62 km ².

Location

Beeckerwerth is located right bank of the Rhine in a bow in Duisburg. With the left side of the Rhine district via the motorway A 42 is connected. Werth means " island " or " peninsula ". Beeckerwerth is the " Beecker island ". Until the Middle Ages the town was completely surrounded by water: to the west and north west of the Rhine, east and northeast of the Emscher River and south of a tributary of the River Emscher, the Monnarde. By the early Middle Ages to the present town, at least parts of it was, still on the left side of the Rhine.

History

The Lords of Beeck, the noble family of plug, settled in the 13th century as the first in Beeckerwerth down. Here they built their wealth on the Rhine Haus Knipp. The fortified castle was first mentioned in 1292, when on the top of a small island - located - a Knypp. Until it was destroyed by floods in 1571 it was the seat of the jurisdiction. 1620 was again rebuilt, but more inland from Beeckerwerth. The court moved into the Kirchdorf Beeck, whose office was the peasantry Beeckerwerth. 1809 Official Beeck was summarized French and Holten for mayor Beeck - Holten. In 1886, the mayor Beeck became independent again. 1904 Beeckerwerth was incorporated along with Beeck and Laar after Ruhrort. On October 1, 1905 Beeckerwerth is a district of Duisburg Ruhr by the incorporation of location.

The industrialist August Thyssen bought in the early 20th century most of the Beeckerwerther property ownership. In 1914 he bought the house Knipp and its lands. The Rheindeich increase raided the house in 1939 to the victim. The house - Knipp - Railway Bridge, built in 1912, rebuilt in 1946 and demolished in 1945 leads, 2 km north of the demolished house 1939 Knipp over the Rhine.

1916 began in Beeckerwerth with the first drilling of coal. It originated mine colonies and the population grew rapidly from about more than 100 to over 4,000 residents. Local residents miners founded in 1925 the sports club SV Beeckerwerth. Had the highest population of the district in the early 1960s with nearly 7,500 residents. In 1963, the mine was closed in Beeckerwerth.
