Behar

Behar (Hebrew בהר, " On the mountain " = Sinai ) denotes a reading portion ( Parasha or Sidra called ) of the Torah, and includes the text of Leviticus / Vayikra 25.1 to 26.2.

It is the Sidra of the 2nd or 3rd Sabbath of the month Iyar or, if connected to Bechukotaj, the 4th Sabbath in the month of Iyar.

  • Every seventh year is a sabbath year, may not be ordered in the field and vineyard; random yield is ownerless property ( hefker ) and should be enjoyed by all
  • Every 50th year jubilee year beyond which no field can be leased; Repurchase of fields is permitted at any time
  • Houses in a walled city may be redeemed within the first year ( special provision in the Levites cities)
  • Houses in open places are considered as free field

  • Israelite slaves must return no later than the year of jubilee as free to their family.
