Beihai-Park

The Beihai Park (Chinese北海 公园/北海 公园, Beihai Pinyin Gōngyuán ) in Beijing is one of the typical Chinese gardens. It is located northwest of the Imperial Palace.

From the Dschurdschischen Jin Dynasty to the Ming and Qing emperors of the North Sea was (Beihai ) together with the mid-lake ( Zhonghai ) and later the South Sea ( Nanhai ) part of the Forbidden City. While the area around the latter two lakes today serves as the seat of government and party under the name of Zhongnanhai and is therefore hermetically sealed, the Beihai is including extending along its shores parks since 1925 available to the public.

The Jin emperor Shizong began in 1179 AD with the construction of a Summer Palace and the investment of this park. Emperor Kublai Khan made it in 1260 to his residence by relating the "Hall of widths cooling". In its place was built by the Qing emperor from 1651 Lamaist " White Pagoda ", which dominates the park today. Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795) has undergone a major expansion work. Almost all of today's buildings in this park date from this period of construction.

As in most Chinese gardens have the building also a high priority. The most significant buildings in this park are:

  • The " White Pagoda "
  • "Studio of the Peaceful Heart ", a " garden in the Garden"
  • The "Hall of celestial bodies "
  • The "Ten Thousand Buddha Tower "
  • The "Nine Dragon Screen ".

Nine-Dragon Wall

In addition to the White Pagoda, the Nine-Dragon Wall one of the main attractions in Beihai Park; they do has already been built shortly after 1402, and covered with 427 seven colored reliefs of glazed tiles. Originally, they protected the residence of the Emperor Yongle, who resided there as long as the Forbidden City was still under construction. The Nine-Dragon Wall presents nine large, playing in the clouds and waves dragon represents the wall is almost 6 meters high, 1.6 meters thick and 25.5 meters long.

In addition to the nine large dragons are on the further detailing of the wall hundreds of other dragon - reliefs shows the total wall 635 kites of all sizes. This is the only dragon wall in China, which was designed by front and back.
