Beira Alta Province

Beira Alta is a former province ( or natural region ) of Portugal. It was originally founded in the 19th century as the removal of part of the territory of the former province of Beira.

The Beira Alta was officially back through the administrative reform in 1936, in contrast to the district Viseu to the District of Guarda. The provinces in 1936 found almost never used in practice, and (but not from the everyday vocabulary of the Portuguese) disappeared from the administrative vocabulary with the entry into force of the Constitution of 1976.

Beira Alta is bordered to the north by Trás -os- Montes and Alto Douro, in the northwest of Douro Litoral, in the west and southwest of Beira Litoral, Beira Baixa to the south and also to the Spanish province of Salamanca, Castile and León.

It consisted of 32 counties, almost all belong to the districts of Guarda and Viseu and two other counties of the former district of Coimbra today. The Government of Beira Alta had its seat in the city of Viseu.

District of Guarda: Aguiar da Beira, Almeida, Celorico of Beira, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Fornos de Algodres, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas, Meda, Pinhel, Sabugal Seia, Trancoso. District of Viseu: Carregal Sal Castro Daire, Mangualde Moimenta da Beira, Mortágua, There, Oliveira de Frades, Penalva do Castelo Lisbon, Santa Comba Dão, Sao Pedro do Sul Sátão, Sernancelhe, Tarouca Tondela, Vila Nova De Paiva Viseu, Vouzela.

For some geographers the province is, together with the Beira Baixa, and sometimes with the involvement of Beira Trasmontana than a larger geographical unit: Beira Interior.

Currently, their territory is divided by the regions north and center, which become a part of the subregion to Douro (councils of Moimenta of Beira, Lisbon and Sernancelhe Tarouca ) belong and in part to the sub-regions of Beira Interior North, Cova Da Beira, The Tell - Lafões and a small part of even the Pinhal Interior Norte. It is a part of the subregion to Douro (consisting of Moimenta Beira, Penedono, Sernancelhe and Tarouca ), and secondly, a portion of the subregions Da Beira Interior Norte, Cova da Beira and Dão Lafões.
