Béjaïa Province
The Bejaia Province (Arabic ولاية بجاية, DMG Wilāyat Biǧāya, also Bidschaya, Vgaiet ) is a province ( wilaya ) in north-eastern Algeria.
The province includes the putative Small Kabylia region, it lies on the Mediterranean coast and has an area of 3,404 km2.
The population consists largely of Kabyles, Berber language spoken is the Kabyle. A total of around 917,000 people ( 2006 estimate ) live in the province, the population density is thus about 270 inhabitants per square kilometer.
More recently, it often came to clashes between the Berber-speaking population and the Algerian central government, there were also a number of deaths.
The provincial capital is Bejaia.
