Bekwai Municipal District

The Amansie East District is one of 138 districts in Ghana. It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and there one of 21 regional districts. The Amansie East District is bordered by the districts Adansi South, Adansi North, Amansie Central, Bosomtwe / Atwima / Kwanwoma, Ejisu Juaben and Asante Akim South. Until the administrative restructuring and the creation of new districts in 2004, the Amansie East District had an area of 1,937 km ² and 219 508 inhabitants. Current chief executive of the now 1167 km ² large district with about 162 270 inhabitants ( 2006), Richard Aboagye. District capital is Bekwai.

Geography

Geographically striking is the largest natural lake in Ghana, the Bosumtwi, which is 2/3 in the district. This lake was created millions of years ago by the impact of a meteorite in the district and is now the object of many geological studies.

The district is covered with tropical rainforest and is located on the Ashanti highlands at an altitude of between 150m and 300m above sea level. Only the edges of the crater Bosumtwi range slightly above the 300 -meter mark beyond. Most important rivers are the Oda and its tributaries Dankran and Anum.

The annual precipitation amounts to 1600-1800 mm. Temperatures range from 20 degrees Celsius in August and 32 degrees Celsius in March. In the dry season the humidity between 70 and 80 % is to be measured. In the rain forests of the district also important export hardwoods such as mahogany, Odum, Wawa and Edinam grow.

With the Bosomtwe Range Forest Reserve and the Fun Forest Reserve two forest reserves are set up in the district.

Economy

Agriculture

The region's economy is predominantly agricultural. In agriculture, 58.2 percent of jobs in the district are forgiven, making this area serves as a major source of income. Overall, the agricultural workers earn 75.9 percent of the revenues of the district. Of the 58.2 percent of jobs account for only 5.2 percent of the fishing operation.

The most important cultivated in the district of foods are cassava, maize, yam, rice, plantain and vegetables. Furthermore, cocoa, citrus fruits, coffee and palm oil are produced for trade. In the farms, the average farm size is 5.3 acres; the national average in this case is 5.0 acres. The vast majority of companies he works as part of a subsistence economy and only uses simple work equipment.

Industry, Trade and Crafts

Industry, trade and craft in Amansie East District are primarily involved in five areas. On the one hand there is a textile industry, a food industry, metal processing industry, crafts and services. Forty percent of the industrial enterprises based on the processing of agricultural products, such as the production of palm oil. The economy, in particular the trade and industry, benefited from the railway station in Bekwai and the banks in Bekwai Kokofu and Anwiankwanta.

Regular and daily taking place for the sub-markets are organized in Bekwai Kokofu, Poano and Nsuta to serve as a trading center for goods and services.

Health

In Amansie East District 14 hospitals and health centers have been established. Five of these health centers, the Bekwai Hospital, Kokofo Hospital, Dunkra Medical Center, the Asiwa Medical Center and the Gyasikrom Medical Center are state-run. Four more are among missions, three private institutions and two locally organized small clinics are available. The most common diseases are malaria, skin diseases, parasites and diarrhea.

Education

In District 116 nurseries and kindergartens, 195 elementary schools, 94 junior secondary schools, 6 senior secondary schools and vocational schools were established by the government so far. Also 27 private educational institutions are available. A particular problem is the poor condition in which there is a variety of schools. For example, ind of 195 primary schools, only 133 in good condition, 62 however, are in such a poor state of repair that immediately action is necessary here. In the Junior Secondary Schools are only 5 of 95 in a state of disrepair. A total of 27 primary schools and six junior secondary school suffer from lack of space; new classrooms would be built.

In primary schools, an average of 28 children are taught by a teacher. In the Junior Secondary Schools accounted for by a teacher 20 students at the Senior Secondary Schools extremely good relationships with six students per teacher are given. Of the primary schools have only own 48 toilets, 147 primary schools have to rely on public toilets. Only 75 primary schools have water supply, 120 schools lack the direct water connection. Among all elementary schools only has a primary school, a small library.

In the Junior Secondary Schools in the district have only 36 schools own toilets, 58 schools can provide their students only by the public toilets. About 37 schools have a water supply, 57 have access to water. Of all the Junior Secondary Schools have two a library.

Infrastructure

The water supply of the population in the district is mainly secured by the rivers in the district. Only 30 percent of the population have access to safe sources of ground water such as tap water, wells and water pumps.

Through the district is a railway track, some stations are still preserved today. The condition of the railway line is to be classified as rather poor.

Bekwai alone in the population are 37 public telephone homes available. Throughout the District 5000 Telephone lines have been laid. In the year 1985, in the district, only 200 telephone lines, in addition, the subsequent separation of a large part of the district is still ignored. Today, about 20 percent of the population are supplied in the district with phone lines.

The postal service has each offering Bekwai Kokofu and a post office. In addition, two small post offices are set up in Poano and Dominase. Only six Gemeindem ( Bekwai Kokofu, Amaoaful, Essumeja, Kortwia and Adom ) have tap water connections. To further water supply of water and sanitation project II were constructed public water points in the district 227 in the frame. Most larger towns have connection to the national electricity grid. In rural areas, almost there is no electricity supply.

Constituencies

In the district there are two constituencies. In the constituency Odotobri was directly elected to parliament Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi as a candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP ). In the constituency Bekwai Ignatius Kofi Poku Adusei - (NPP ) was directly elected to parliament.

Others

In Amansie East District is located in Kokofu - Anyinam Osei Tutu I. the birthplace of the founder of the Ashanti Kingdom.
