Bel (mythology)

Belus is the legendary founder of Babylon, the Assyrian Nineveh as Ninos. However, he was worshiped in Babylonian- Assyrian times as Sun God. In spätbabylonischer time it was merged with Ba'al and Marduk. The Greeks were the ruins of Babylon as Etemenanki in grave of Belus. Strabo ( Geographika 16, 1.5) describes it as a quadrangular pyramid of brick from one stage of a side and a stage height. It was allegedly destroyed by Xerxes. Alexander the Great wanted to build it again, what prevented him from his early death. Strabo indicates, only the removal of the debris had 10,000 men engaged two months.
