Belawan is a port city in the Indonesian province of Sumatra Utara ( North Sumatra ) on the north east coast of the island of Sumatra. It is located at Sungai Belawan, the mouth of the River Deli in the Strait of Malacca, about 20 km north of Medan. It is the largest port in Indonesia outside of Java.

The port was built in 1890 for the handling of tobacco from the railroad on ships. It was extended in 1907 for the first time. With the expansion of rubber and palm oil plantations in North Sumatra and the handling of goods at the port grew. In the 1920s, the port was expanded in 1938 and Belawan was the largest port in the Dutch East Indies, calculated according to the value of the cargo. After the independence of Indonesia product turnover fell dramatically and could only reach the old level in the 1960s. 1985, a new container terminal was built, which handles a fifth of Indonesia's container throughput. Main trading goods are rubber, palm oil, tea and coffee.

From Belawan regular ferries to Penang in Malaysia and according to Satun in Thailand.
