Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad (1871–2007)

The Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad (B & ML) is a former railway company in Maine (United States). It existed as an independent company of 1867 and 2005.

The Company was incorporated on 28 February 1867, with the aim to link the coastal town of Belfast to the existing railway network. The 53.2 km long standard gauge railway line Burnham Junction Belfast was completed on December 23, 1870 and officially opened the following year.

On 10 May 1871, the Maine Central Railroad leased the Belfast & Moosehead Lake for first 50 years. The contract was then renewed annually, but expired at the end of the year 1925. The Belfast & Moosehead Lake was then taken over as of 2 January 1926 by the city of Belfast. From 1946 to 1951, the railway company acquired a total of five GE 70 - ton switcher diesel locomotives, which led to the discontinuation of steam operation in 1948.

Following the decline of transport need an operation began in 1987 with tourist trains. On 9 June 2005, the freight was adjusted and resolved the railway company. The track was sold to the state of Maine, the vehicles at the club Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad Preservation Society, which further resulted in the tourist traffic by early 2008.
