Belgian Red cattle

The Red Flemish beef is a Belgian breed of cattle, which is critically endangered.

Features

The animals are solid red, sometimes with a few white spots on the head, chest, abdomen and legs. The cows have a weight of about 700 kg, height at withers of 140 cm, adult bulls weighing in at about 1200 kg, height at withers of 150 cm. The yield of the cows was 1986 on average about 5000 kg milk with 4.03% fat and 3.35 % protein. The breed is used for milk production and for meat production.

Origin and Distribution

The Red Flemish beef is a long-established race in Flanders and was operated from 1920 as a breeding herd book. In 1986 there were about 50,000 cows. Their levels decreased rapidly, so that in 2001 less than 100 cows were available.
