It was discovered by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition in 1957/58 under Gaston de Gerlache de Gomery. The name derives from the expedition ship Belgica Belgica of the first expedition of 1897-99, which had been led by de Gerlaches Father Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery.

Highest mountain in the Belgica Mountains is Mount Victor with a height of 2590 m. Other mountain peaks are Mount Van Mieghem and Mount Boe.
