Belgium–Luxembourg Economic Union

The BLEU is the 1922 ratified Belgo-Luxembourg Economic Union. Although the population of Luxembourg had spoken in the popular referendum on 28 September 1919, a majority of over 60 % for an economic union with France, and two years later it came to sign the contract with the Union Economique Belgo - Luxembourgeoise between Luxembourg and Belgium, as France faced an economic connection with Luxembourg. The BLEU was a forerunner of the Benelux Economic Union.

According to the historian Charles Barthel Luxembourg was obliged to sign the contract, probably for economic dependencies out.

The contract was signed in 1921 by Belgium and Luxembourg and entered into force on 22 December 1922. This economic union includes various contracts which have as their objective the economic cooperation between the two countries. Content of the contracts are mostly common excise taxes and the Belgo-Luxembourg monetary association ( until the introduction of the euro in 2002 ). The contract was signed in 1972, 1982, 1992 and 2002 renewed.
